One of the most common misconceptions is that breakouts form overnight. In truth, the acne cycle begins days or even weeks before blemishes reach the skin’s surface. In fact, seeing a pimple is like witnessing the finale, not the beginning of the show.
The acne cycle starts when hormones trigger sebum (oil) production. The sebum combined with dead skin cells lead to clogged pores. When pores are blocked, oxygen can’t get in and acne bacteria can quickly reproduce. The result is inflamed acne blemishes.
