\u201cButylene glycol&nbsp; is used in skin care, makeup and hair care products,\u201d Dr. Green says. \u201cIt improves hydration to the skin or hair by attracting water to the outer layers. It also facilitates absorption of the active ingredient and is also used as a humectant by attracting moisture to the skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, because it acts as a solvent, it helps to keep ingredients evenly distributed, so things like pigments or dyes won\u2019t clump in a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Green adds that butylene glycol has actually been around for quite some time. \u201cIt\u2019s been around for a long time, however it increased in popularity recently over its counterpart, propylene glycol, as it is less irritating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skin_Care_Products_with_Butylene_Glycol\"><\/span>Skin Care Products with Butylene Glycol<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Butylene glycol is in a handful of skin care products you apply topically, and is usually in gel-like skin care products, some of which you might already have in your bathroom or medicine cabinet. They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rodanandfields.com\/en-us\/shop\/redefine-overnight-restorative-cream\/p\/AAPM030\" target=\"_blank\">Anti-aging night creams<\/a><\/li><li>Hydrating serums<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rodanandfields.com\/en-us\/shop\/active-hydration-bright-eye-complex\/p\/ENHEY15\" target=\"_blank\">Under eye creams<\/a><\/li><li>Sunscreen<\/li><li>Shampoo<\/li><li>Conditioner<\/li><li>Sheet masks<\/li><li>Lotions<\/li><li>Makeup, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodanandfields.com\/en-us\/shop\/radiant-defense-perfecting-liquid-spf-30\/p\/DERDS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tinted moisturizers<\/a> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Butylene_Glycol_Benefits\"><\/span>Butylene Glycol Benefits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a handful of benefits of butylene glycol for skin, according to Dr. Green. \u201cButylene glycol is a great moisturizing skin care ingredient and helps to improve the overall look and feel of skin by increasing hydration,\u201d she explains. \u201cProducts containing butylene glycol help to create a soft and smooth skin texture and promote moisture retention in the skin for long-lasting results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Butylene glycol is also sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4025519\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used in moisturizers meant to help with acne<\/a>, although it isn\u2019t the active ingredient. Still, more research is needed here, as people have used it have reported clogged pores and irritated skin, which has actually worsened their acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Butylene_Glycol_Safety_and_Side_Effects\"><\/span>Butylene Glycol Safety and Side Effects<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, Dr. Green says that she considers butylene glycol to be a safe, effective skin care ingredient \u2014 although there hasn\u2019t been a ton of research conducted on it, so we don\u2019t quite know what its long term impact is as of now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one issue you might want to watch out for when it comes to butylene glycol safety in the short-term is irritation. \u201cIt can definitely be irritating, especially for those with sensitive skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And although it\u2019s pretty <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25182293\/\">uncommon<\/a>, there have been some reports of allergic contact dermatitis reactions to butylene glycol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Butylene_Glycol_vs_Propylene_Glycol\"><\/span>Butylene Glycol vs Propylene Glycol<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Butylene glycol is often compared to propylene glycol, and that\u2019s because the two are used in similar products and both derived from petroleum. But Dr. Green says that it\u2019s always a good idea to opt for butylene glycol over propylene glycol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese two ingredients are both derivatives of petroleum, however, butylene glycol is less irritating to the skin,\u201d she explains. \u201cPropylene can cause skin irritation therefore not used as often in skin care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summary\"><\/span>Summary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you\u2019re looking to add some moisture to your skin or simply want to know what the term \u201cbutylene glycol\u201d means, well, now you know \u2014 and using it will likely help make your hair and skin feel softer.
