Here, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michelegreenmd.com\/hydrafacial-keravive-nyc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cosmetic Dermatologist Dr. Michele Green<\/a> breaks down a few of them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seborrheic dermatitis&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seborrheic dermatitis refers to a skin condition that causes irritation and inflammation of the skin. \u201cIt is also referred to as scalp eczema,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is characterized by scaly, pink areas of skin with associated itchiness and often affects areas with a high concentration of sebaceous glands.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Green adds that this can cause dandruff and may be linked to a family history, an inflammatory reaction, increased androgen level, increased skin lipids, or an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast. \u201cSeborrheic dermatitis is often triggered or worsened by stress, cold &amp; dry weather, oily skin, and other skin disorders like rosacea, psoriasis, and acne.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Contact_dermatitis\"><\/span>Contact dermatitis&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contact dermatitis appears when the skin on the scalp comes into contact with an irritant in soaps, shampoos, and hair dyes. \u201cIt is characterized by rash, itchiness, burning, and even blistering,\u201d Dr. Green says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Folliculitis\"><\/span>Folliculitis&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Folliculitis refers to when the hair follicles become infected with bacteria, fungus, or virus. \u201cIt is characterized by small lesions similar to acne and often occurs on parts of the body with a high concentration of hair follicles,\u201d Dr. Green says. \u201cThere may be associated itchiness and pain. The infection can be caused by bacteria in swimming pools, viruses like herpes simplex, or wearing tight clothes that cause friction.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Head_lice\"><\/span>Head lice&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lice are small parasitic insects that cause itching and red bumps on the scalp, Dr. Green explains. \u201cThey can also affect the neck and shoulders. They commonly affect children but can affect adults as it spreads quickly through combs, brushes, hats, and bedding.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_Scalp_Problems\"><\/span>Types of Scalp Problems&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of the most common types of scalp problems include an oily scalp and a dry scalp. The oil glands may produce too much sebum if they recognize that the scalp is dry, which can happen when you overwash your hair, stimulating sebum production to hydrate the scalp.
